Philosophy
The study of your voice can be very rewarding. Imagine singing in a group with confidence instead of feeling self-conscious of your voice. Imagine enjoying singing even when you are not in the shower! There are some basic principles that everyone (with normal hearing and speech) can learn to improve the quality of their singing voice.
You may have been told that you are tone-deaf and that you should not try to sing. I believe that this is a lie perpetrated by misguided people who honestly believe that singing ability is a gift that is bestowed on some and not on others. I am here to tell you that singing is a skill that can be learned! Now I do believe that some people find it easier to learn to sing, just as some people find it easier to do math problems than other people do. But we can all agree that practically everyone can learn some math. And it is the same with singing.
Here at Spinning Silk, I start out by listening to you sing. Then, I begin to pinpoint what you need to work on the most. As we work together, you learn to breathe correctly (using your diaphragm), to hear the difference between pitches, and to improve the overall sound of your voice. We work through many different exercises to help with these things and then learn songs to which we apply these concepts.
Perhaps you are one of those who say, "I can't carry a tune in a bucket!" If that is how you feel, please give me a call. If you are truly willing to work at it, and you have normal hearing and speech, you can learn to sing!
What to Expect
My voice students learn to sing with confidence through exercises that encourage proper breathing and voice focus. I encourage my students to choose to study songs that they will enjoy singing.
